Stan Mikita shot this historic puck past Vancouver’s Cesare Maniago to be become the eighth member of the NHL’s 500-Goal Club. The placement of the "500" matches up to a photo of Stan proudly holding this milestone goal puck, which he scored to the delight of a jubilant Chicago Stadium crowd in the third period of the Black Hawks’ 4-3 loss to the Canucks on February 27, 1977. “Mikita (Maniago) February 27, 1977 ‘500’ Vanc 3-4” reads the handwritten notation on the vintage strip of medical tape applied to the back of the puck. According to our consignor, his aunt had this puck, which is the correct type for the era, in her drawer for over 40 years along with the “501” goal puck also offered. She had obtained it from her closest friend, a neighbor to many Black Hawks players who lived in Elmhurst, Ill., at that time and also wrote for the local newspaper and did Hawks-related stories.
The "500" applied to the front of the puck, which is coming unglued, is cut out from the same medical tape material. While the cut-out numbers have shrunk over the years, glue residue shows their original sizes.
