Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Among the hobby's all-time classics and most attractive hockey cards are Gordie Howe's 1954-55 Topps and '63-64 Parkhurst issues, with Topps' inaugural eye-catching colors featured here. And what a time in Gordie's career; card #8 informs that after eight seasons he was already regarded by many experts as the greatest hockey player of all-time, having won the NHL scoring championship the previous four seasons. Howe was dethroned by Bernie Geoffrion the season cards like this were issued but in the playoffs, Detroit captured its fourth Stanley Cup in six years. Having just been received back from inspection and grading at PSA, this copy of Howe's desirable first Topps release offering has been deemed worthy of the company's VG-EX 4 mark with wear to the four (4) corners and edges as well as some surface toning surely keeping it from achieving a higher destination than what it has been given. Also having been heightened further by the fact that "Mr. Hockey" has signed over the front of the card with a black ballpoint pen ink signature that displays well and with only light fading, the graders shared a similar sentiment when they looked at the prized autograph, giving it a mark of "8" for its effort. Housed in a flawless PSA holder, only seventeen (17) such signed and graded examples have been examined by the company over the years according to their POP Report, with this POP-3 specimen bettered by only a single card that received a grade of EX-MT 6.
