Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

Drafted by both the New York Islanders and the WHA's Edmonton Oilers in 1974 after helping the Regina Pats to a Memorial Cup championship, Clark Gillies would go the route of the National Hockey League for his career path, playing all but 86 of his 958 NHL games played on Long Island as a member of the Islanders and helping lead the club to four (4) straight Stanley Cup championships in the early-1980s. Serving as captain of the Islanders between 1977 and 1979 and also suiting up for Team Canada at the 1981 Canada Cup, Gillies would go on to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002 and tragically pass away far too soon in 2022. Offered here, and originally hailing from his personal collection, we present this photo-matched Islanders jersey worn by Gillies during the 1981-82 season in which he recorded a career high 38 goals and helped New York to their 3rd straight Stanley Cup. Made by Sandow SK, washed out brand labeling that displays a faded size "52" designation and Gillies' number "9" in black marker ink is affixed to the inner collar along with a washing instructions tag as well while the "Sandow SK" logo is screened over the revere hem. A heavy weight mesh construction garment, the front of the piece is decorated with an Islanders team crest in layered tackle twill while the sleeves and verso have been styled with Gillies' familiar number "9" in dual layer white-over-orange tackle twill numerals. Having had "Gillies" spelt out in matching layered twill letters across the affixed matching mesh nameplate at the top of the reverse, the jersey, featuring good pilling and a loop style fight strap on the interior, shows excellent game-wear throughout including stick marks over the front, lower reverse and both sleeves, coloured board paint transfers through the "9" of the right sleeve, board burns over both sleeves, un-repaired cuts and small holes in both sleeves and additional board burns over both the lower front and reverse as well. Additionally, the finishing stitching at the end of the left cuff has let go as well. Accompanied by an LOA, the jersey has been conclusively photo-matched to an included image from the season clearly showing the stick marks that appear through the "NY" of the team crest.
