The first great Stanley Cup rivalry, 17 matches would be contested between Winnipeg and Montreal clubs over a 13 year period, from 1896 to 1908. Represented chiefly by the Victoria Hockey Club, the River City would also contribute the Winnipeg Rowing Club and Maple Leaf Hockey Team to battle for Lord Stanley’s hardware against a number of remarkable Montreal squads that included The Victorias, Shamrocks, Wanderers and the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. The 1900 series would witness a best-of-three format, with the Manitoba champion Victoria Hockey Club challenging current Cup holder and powerhouse in the form of the Montreal Shamrocks. Winnipeg, led by Hall of Famer Dan Bain would defeat the Shamrocks in Game 1 of the series played at the famous Westmount Arena on Feb 12th 1900. The Shamrocks would prove to be too much for the visiting westerners over the three games, winning the last two to retain their prestigious title. Shamrocks captain Harry Trihey would emerge as the series star, scoring seven goals for the Montreal hopefuls over the three games, including four in the tie-breaking match.
We are pleased to be able to offer what is recognized as the earliest known Stanley Cup Finals ticket in existence. Hailing from the first game of the series, the diminutive 1 ½” x 3 ½” relic lists all of the crucial particulars, including “Stanley Cup Series”. Labeled “Authentic” by PSA, the full ticket is said to have originated from the collection of a contemporary player. We cannot stress enough how extremely rare this ticket is. Early items of ANY KIND associated with the infancy of the Stanley Cup are next to impossible to locate, making this ticket one of the hobby’s true holy grails. We should also add that the ticket itself remains in gorgeous condition, adding to its rightful status as one of early hockey’s greatest prizes.
