Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Our consignor’s intriguing stash of classic collectibles continues with this rather captivating gathering of crisp 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee goodies, with Bobby Orr’s captivating and peerless previous season leading to six different Orr cards and two inserts, all of them here to headline a terrific offering. NM and better cards abound, with intermittent touched or lightly dinged corners resulting in the “mid” in our title, but let us be clear – the high bidder will have a treat zeroing-in on the NM-MT and higher representatives and deciding on the numerous submission candidates. Orr’s well-centered regular (#3) issue is NM in our eyes, similar to his 236-All-Star card, with two trophy cards at least NM and the other two EX+ and EX. The set’s three key rookie cards are led by a NM-MT Gilbert Perreault RC, with those of Bobby Clarke (NM+) and Darryl Sittler (NM) also inviting. An EX-MT Brad Park RC is joined by a duplicate with a surface/production imperfection (otherwise NM-MT), while the two checklists are impressive NM (MK) and NM-MT contributors. Magnification is required to detect many of the minuscule flaws, with PSA finding little fault with a Jean Beliveau card that merited a NM-MT 8 assessment, with a (raw) duplicate EX-MT. The #1-Cheevers card is a scuffed VG exception, but immaculate surfaces generally are the norm. Sixteen luscious sticker stamps are pretty much like when they were issued and feature Orr (NM-MT), Esposito, Beliveau and four other Hall of Famers, with the little stack of Deckle Edge inserts starring Orr (VG+ due to a small light crease), Howe, Espo and seven additional HOFers. Possibilities and enjoyment galore are what’s in store for the astute new owner of this tempting booty.
