Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Considered to be the most challenging among the Crescent Ice Cream hockey card issues of the era is this one, with the Winnipeg Tammany Tigers and Winnipeg Falcons joining forces to compete in the Manitoba Senior Hockey League for the 1924-25 season. Among the nicest known examples are the enticing encapsulated relics offered here (most are THE nicest examples!), originally available with bricks of ice cream and one card, #6, short-printed to reduce the number of prizes the firm had to award. For those who pursue the finest the hobby has to offer, this ensemble and its numbers are staggering and tantalizing. The PSA Population Report confirms the rarity of the cards with between just two and six of each example ever submitted to PSA in the history of the firm. Remarkably, ten of the 13 here are Pop 1s with none higher, including 4-Murray Murdoch (misspelled “Murdock”) who would go on to be a New York Ranger mainstay and iron man (first NHLer to play 500 consecutive games) and who later coached Yale University for 27 years. The Murdoch card is an EX 5, similar to four others; 7-Ward McVey, 9-Lorne Carrol, 10-Tony Wise and 13-Harry Neal, while the condition leader at EX-MT 6 is 3-Wally Fridfinson, one of just two cards out of the 40 total submissions (all players combined) to attain such a mark. Four at VG-EX 4 that contribute to the Pop 1-with-none-higher roster are 1-Bill Cockburn, 2-Wally Byron, 8-Tote Mitchell and 12-Gordon McKenzie, while completing are 5-Oliver Redpath (VG 3), 11-Johnny Myers (VG-EX 4) and 14-Blake Watson (VG 3)(Pop 3 with none higher). Twelve of the 13 cards were part of the All-Time Finest set at PSA and if this ensemble were to be entered, it would be the Current Finest. Thought-provoking indeed and ready to elevate the importance of your pre-war card shrine.
