Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Well known to modern hockey fans as a long-time broadcaster, with his contributions honoured by the Hockey Hall of Fame, John Davidson backstopped the New York Rangers and St Louis Blues during his goaltending tenure in the 1970s and early-1980s, with a few additional games spent in the AHL. Originating from his rookie season with St Louis, we have a Blues jersey worn by the Ottawa native in 1973-74, where he saw action in 39 regular-season contests. A period Rawlings label with “50” sizing sits affixed to the collar, with a “30” number swatch sewn directly beneath. Styled with the classic blue note team crest administered in layered tackle twill, “30” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material. There is also evidence of a former TV nameplate, with a lace and loop-style fight strap utilized. Sporting light to moderate game-use, a small hole and unrepaired run are present on the otherwise clean front, with a few rust-coloured stains visible on each sleeve. An additional unrepaired run and a few other small stains are also present on the reverse. A detailed LOA document will accompany this desirable rookie sweater.
Six images from the 1973-74 season are showing the correct size/placement of the sleeve and verso numbers, with a photo showing a loose blue thread on the lower front collar that appears to match the offered sweater. A pair of images also show details to the "3" on the left sleeve, with the angled top portion of the "3" showing as well as other factors such as; crimps in middle stem, crimps in the upper part of the number, the upward angle of the gold stitching at the base of the middle stem, and the anomaly of the gold stitching at the base of the number.
