Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

An especially rare style that saw limited use in the NHL from just March of 1953 to December of 1955, we have an orange referee’s wool jersey, with this scarce example seldom if ever found. A size “42” fly tag is affixed to the bottom left inside seam, with the remnants of a second label visible that has been cut away. Also measuring to roughly a modern size 42, an embroidered NHL shield crest is affixed over the left breast, with “15” over the verso in early-style black twill similar to satin. With a solid orange body and matching striping over the black lapel collar, cuffs and waist band, this accenting is noteworthy, as our research pinpoints this particular striping to use during 1953. The inside reverse collar has also had the matching verso-number satin added, most likely due to irritation from the wool after prolonged use. The important sweater remains in beautiful condition with rich colour saturation and a gorgeous clean NHL crest, with small holes present over the front, upper reverse, right shoulder and sleeve. There is also a small area of fading on the upper left sleeve, along with a diminutive repair along the right shoulder seam. An LOA will accompany this NHL treasure.
