Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

Atlanta Braves closer Gene Garber and the 1978 season will always conjure up memories of the end of Pete Rose’s NL-record 44-game hitting streak. Rose’s streak came to an end on Aug. 1 when he went 0-for-4 with a walk against the Braves, swinging at strike three in the ninth in his second appearance against Garber to end Cincinnati’s 16-4 loss in Atlanta. Garber’s 1978 Braves gray road jersey has Wilson size 42 tagging in the back of the neck and a “78” season patch on the left front tail. Script “Atlanta” across the chest and No. 26 on the front and back are blue and white double twill with red thread stitching outlines. Patch on the left sleeve features red and blue twill sewn on white twill.
Garber had 25 saves in 1978, including 22 while closing out 36 of the 43 games he pitched for the Braves after he was acquired from Philadelphia in a trade for starter Dick Ruthven on June 15.
