Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2016
With a limited-edition number of “66/999”, it’s fitting that this Wayne Gretzky signed Ninety-Nine tour jersey was originally gifted to fellow legend Mario Lemieux. With Maska Ultrafil and size tagging affixed to the collar, there’s also dual embroidered CCM patches on the back bottom hem. With tackle twill numbers and captain’s “C”, the sweater also features the NHLPA crest over the right breast. Wayne has signed the garment in the first back “9” in black marker along with “Tour 94”, and the signature has bled very slightly into the material. The “Ninety-Nine” tour was conceived by Gretzky, and it featured NHL all-stars in exhibition games played in different countries during the 1994 NHL lockout.
Hand numbered “66/999” in the lower portion of the first back “9”, we should elaborate on the provenance of this jersey. Originally obtained from an equipment staff member of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, the jersey was presented as the example that was first given to Mario Lemieux by Wayne Gretzky himself.
