Super Mario Lemieux was just short of retiring from hockey for the first time when he donned this signed 1996-97 Pittsburgh Penguins game-worn captain’s jersey. Only 31 years old, Le Magnifique decided to call it a day at the end of the season despite scoring 50 goals and leading the NHL with 122 points for his sixth and final Art Ross Trophy. Mario placed a black marker autograph in the middle of the Penguins crest sewn on the front of this No. 66 gamer with the captain’s C sewn on the left breast in black and golden yellow double twill. NHL Center Ice, Starter and size 56-R tagging are sewn in the back of the neck, with a lightly faded black marker “66” and “C” handwritten on the Starter tag. A “66 Lemieux ’96-97” patch is sewn inside the rear hem, a short-lived practice the team followed during the last few months leading up to his first retirement. The dated notation “2/16/97 vs Flyers” handwritten in black marker behind the crest inside the front of the jersey is signed “Steve” by Penguins equipment manager Steve Latin. Best of game wear includes a small black mark on the white stripe on the front of the right shoulder and light black marks on the front of the left sleeve.
More game wear includes a light mark to the left of the numbers on the back of the right sleeve, a dot of a black mark to the right of the elbow gusset seam on the back of the lower right sleeve, a small black mark on the back of the left sleeve, and three small pulls in the white airknit fabric, one to the right of the nameplate, and the others on either side of the left back and sleeve seam.
Mario had one assist in Pittsburgh’s 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at the Civic Arena on February 16, 1997.
