The Detroit Red Wings won the Prince of Wales Trophy in 1952-53, finishing first in the NHL for a fifth straight season with a 36-16-18 record for 90 points. From HOF center Alex Delvecchio’s personal collection is this silver plated pitcher, which was gifted to Red Wings players to commemorate their fine regular season. Delvecchio was named to the NHL’s Second All-Star Team as a sophomore. This water pitcher is very nicely preserved with "Detroit Hockey Club Inc, NHL Champions 1952-53 Alex Delvecchio" engraved on the front of the barrel below the spout. "Sheffield Reproduction SP - Copper" is stamped on the bottom of the pitcher, which has a dent on the bottom edge to the left of the handle and is otherwise in fine shape. Comes with Alex Delvecchio’s signed LOA.
Delvecchio’s 59 points in 1952-53 tied him for fourth in the NHL, but just third on his own team! He scored 16 goals in his second full NHL season and was second in the league with 43 assists. That was three assists behind teammate Gordie Howe, who won the Art Ross Trophy with 95 points, 24 more than fellow HOFer Ted Lindsay’s 71 points. Montreal’s Maurice “Rocket” Richard finished third with 61 points, and Delvecchio was two points back, tied with Wally Hergesheimer of the New York Rangers.
The Red Wings went on to finish first in the NHL each of the next two seasons to set a record of seven straight regular season titles.
