Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2021
An extreme rarity for collectors, early glass plate negatives of hockey seldom if ever surface, especially examples featuring noteworthy clubs and Hall of Fame superstars. We offer a collection of eleven, highlighted by a specimen that features legendary Montreal Canadiens superstar and tragic figure Howie Morenz. Included in the 5” x 7” range, we have a pair of glass negatives of longtime Canadiens coach Cecil Hart, a circa mid-1930s glass negative of the Montreal Maroons bench showing players including Lionel Conacher, and six matching negatives that all show Ottawa Senators players including Frank Finnigan. Lastly, we also have a circa 1910 glass negative that appears to show a match being played at McGill’s rink, possibly between the Redmen and Westmount (3 ¼” x 4”, with the image reproduced as a postcard).
The Morenz glass plate negative is approx 1 ¾” x 3”, and features a full-length image of the legend in his Habs uniform. The majority of the negatives appear to survive in very good condition, with wear expected from their former use along with age and storage.
