First reporting to the Ottawa Montagnards despite previously signing a contract with the WCHL’s Saskatoon Sheiks as an eighteen-year-old, Ebenezer Robertson "Ebbie” Goodfellow would spend a trio of seasons with the Montagnards before signing with the NHL’s Detroit franchise in 1928. Starting in the Motor City during the club’s final season as the Cougars, Goodfellow would famously center the notable line with Herbie Lewis and Larry Aurie, scoring an impressive 48 points in 1930-31 – second only to Howie Morenz – with selection to the NHL First All-Star Team in both 1936-37 and 1939-40. A total of 14 glorious seasons would be spent in Motown, with Stanley Cups won in 1936, 1937 and 1943, with the Hart Trophy awarded to the Ottawa native in 1940 while playing as a defenceman. Rightful enshrinement would occur for Ebbie in 1983, and he continued to serve in his beloved sport, spending an additional twenty-one years on the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee before sadly passing from cancer in 1985.
Recognized as the NHL’s third benefit game to aid one of it’s fallen, the Babe Siebert Memorial game occurred before the start of the 1939-40 season on Oct 29th, and featured a selection of “All-Stars” led by Eddie Shore and Busher Jackson, taking on Siebert’s Montreal Canadiens in front of over 6000 at the Montreal Forum, with the stars topping the Habs 5-2. Hailing from that historically important event and originally obtained from Ebbie Goodfellow's son in Detroit in the 1990s, we are elated to be able to offer Ebbie Goodfellow’s Babe Siebert Memorial Game NHL All-Stars wool sweater. Measuring-out to roughly a size 44, a label from longtime Montreal supplier McNiece’s is affixed to the inside seam, with no additional tagging present. Featuring what appears to be thin star-shaped leather layered over black felt placed atop the chest, the letters and numbers for “N.H.L. ALL STARS 1939” have been cut away, with “14” over verso in matching black leather over black felt. Orange and black collar, cuffs and lower hem striping bands – the official colours of the NHL – have also been utilized, and remain bright and vibrant. Some minor age cracking to the leather team crest has occurred, with just a tiny area of loss, with the material still pliable and supple. Tiny holes are also visible over both the front and verso including near the team crest, with just a few faint marks present.
Considered one of the greatest and most versatile Detroit players in history and combined with his status as an ORIGINAL Red Wing, we feel the offered sweater is one of the most important specimens to ever hit the auction block. It should be further noted that Goodfellow was the first – and one of only four Red Wings in history – to be awarded the prestigious Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s unquestioned MVP. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
It should also be mentioned that the images of the Memorial Game program shown are for reference purposes only, with the program not included.
