Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Taking place on January 18, 1977 at the Hartford Civic Center, the fifth edition of the midseason classic for the WHA saw the East All-Stars, led by Real Cloutier and J.C. Tremblay, skate away with a 4-2 win over Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and the rest of the Western combatants. Hailing from his second North American professional season as a member of the Winnipeg Jets in which he put up 44 goals and 36 assists for 80 points in 79 games played as Winnipeg made their second (2nd) of four (4) straight AVCO World Cup Finals appearances. Chipping in a goal in the third (3rd) period, offered here is this West All-Stars jersey worn by Lindstrom during the 1976-77 WHA All-Star contest. A light weight blue mesh offering with Gerry Cosby tagging affixed to the inner collar that measures out to roughly a modern size "48", "Lindstrom" is spelt out over the upper reverse in single layer white twill letters that have been sewn down directly to the material while Willy's number "20" has been added over the sleeves and verso in dual layer red-over-white tackle twill numerals. Decorated with the WHA crest, stripes, stars, and “WHA” over the front and rear tails of the jersey in a heat-screened vinyl style, the jersey, despite being worn for only a single game, shows good game-wear in the form of staining over the front, board burns and an unrepaired cut over the right sleeve/cuff, board burns and stick marks over the left sleeve/cuff, spots of white board paint transfers over the hem of the left hip and a stain on the reverse. Also showing some sweat staining around the collar, the jersey has been video matched to a screenshot of Lindstrom taken from footage of the game after his goal in the third (3rd) period that shows the white board paint transfers over the hem of the left hip.
Additionally, joining the jersey is the "Most Valuable Player" (MVP) award that was presented to Willy following the completion of the game. A large cup that stands 11" high and displays well, handles are found over each side. Engraved with "Connecticut General Award - Fifth Annual - WHA All Star Game - Divisional - Most Valuable Player" over the front of the piece, a small amount of tarnishing is observed throughout while a heavier dose of it is found on the interior of the cup. Also showing a couple of cracks over the front and through the engraving, it is also worth noting that the piece is missing the original wooden base that it was mounted on and because of it, a plate used to reinforce the bottom can be seen that shows various random engravings and symbols that was likely just used as a test piece at the manufactures. A fantastic pairing of items hailing from Lindstrom's personal collection, his signed LOA will accompany the lot.
