This sensational 1972 Olympic bronze medal for ice hockey was claimed by Czechoslovakia national team goalie Vladimir Dzurilla. Best remembered in North America for shutting out Team Canada 1976 in Czechoslovakia's stunning 1-0 win at the inaugural Canada Cup, Dzurilla formed a formidable goaltending tandem with Jiri Holecek in Sapporo. The Slovakian veteran made 39 saves in a crucial 2-1 win over Sweden on February 10 as Czechoslovakia claimed bronze behind the Olympic champion U.S.S.R. and a surprising silver by a talented young American squad. Obtained directly from the family of the late, great netminder, this Olympic bronze medal comes with its original ribbon and presentation box, which includes a "Sapporo 72" lapel pin. Please see our website description for more information about this highly desirable piece of Olympic hockey history which comes with a letter of authenticity from the Dzurilla family. Other than a series of horizontal marks on the face, the medal remains in splendid condition overall as does its original ribbon, which has a few sticky stains/spots to note. The box remains a superb piece in itself despite a broken clasp and similar stains/spots as observed on the ribbon in the inner compartment of the case hidden below the medal’s bed.
