Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
Attractive 10K gold creation brings forth the story of Canada's withdrawal from the 1970 World Hockey Championships, originally slated to be held in Montreal and Winnipeg. After the IIHF agreed to allow Canada to use nine professionals at the 1970 Worlds, it changed its mind following Canada's second place finish with five pros on its roster at the 1969 Izvestia Tournament. Canada then waived its right to host the '70 tourney, which was moved to Stockholm, Sweden. "World Hockey - Canada" encircles a big red stone here, with "1970" below a World Championships logo on one shank and a Canadian coat of arms on the other. The size 6 1/2 ring has "10K" stamped on the inner band. The red stone has four tiny chips to the edges of the cut stone while the rest of the ring exhibits light scuffing/light scratches and a few minor dents but overall display nicely. According to information provided by our consignor, only a few of these rings were produced due to the cancellation of the 1970 World Championships in Canada.
