Historical Hockey Memorabilia Spring 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/12/2012
The fifth and final offering of former Edmonton Oiler owner Peter Pocklington's awesome Stanley Cup championship ring collection, this one recalls how a group of young veteran players, who had in past years supported scoring leader Wayne Gretzky as he led the team to four Cup triumphs, were able to reach the pinnacle of the hockey world without his help. Mark Messier, who will go down in hockey history as one of the greatest leaders of all-time, forged his reputation during the memorable championship run. After a 90-point regular season, the Oilers first had to come through with three straight wins to beat the Jets in a seven-game opening round series, before sweeping Gretz and the Kings and beating the Black Hawks in six to reach the finals against Boston. A triple overtime win in game one in the longest game in Cup finals history paved the way for a 4-games-to-1 win, Craig Simpson's second period goal proving to be the Cup-winner in Edmonton's 4-1 clinching victory at Boston Garden.
Goaltender Bill Ranford's playoff heroics earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy and Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Kevin Lowe, Charlie Huddy and Randy Gregg joined Messier in winning their fifth Stanley Cup rings as members of the Oilers. Five large diamonds thus are joined by 16 smaller ones on the face of this gorgeous creation, with the year and "Stanley Cup Champions" encircling them. The team's logo, the year and "Pocklington" appear on one shank, with an image of Lord Stanley's silverware, reference to Edmonton's five Cup titles and the years of each engraved onto a motivational carrot featured on the other. Size 10-1/2 ring is stamped "Jostens 14K" on the inside of the band and is in near perfect condition, showing only light wear.
Offered in this collection are the Stanley Cup Championship rings originally awarded to Edmonton Oilers team owner Peter Pocklington for his part in five thrilling Stanley Cup victories between 1984 and 1990. These fabulous and original rings were produced for Peter Pocklington by the famed craftsmen at Jostens and Balfour and each ring will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity and provenance signed by Peter Pocklington himself. Additionally, each will come with an authenticating document from Jostens executive Barry Properzi detailing that he has examined each ring and attesting that these are the actual rings that were originally ordered by and produced for Oilers team owner Peter Pocklington. Also accompanying the rings are copies of the original Jostens order forms from the 1980s confirming that Peter Pocklington had ordered Stanley Cup championship rings for himself and for his father Basil Pocklington.
