Some of the biggest names in hockey took part in a farewell game last December to celebrate Igor Larionov's retirement from professional hockey after an incredible 27 seasons. The game was played December 13th at the Luzhniki Arena in Moscow and featured many of Larionov's former Detroit Red Wing teammates playing for "Team World", against a team of well-known Russian NHLers. Three sets of jerseys were produced, with the players wearing each set for a period. The money raised by the sale of these jerseys will go to The Larionov Youth Hockey Charitable Foundation which Igor established to raise and disburse funds to support and develop amateur hockey players, both in North America and Russia. Many of the young athletes who will benefit from the foundation would not otherwise have the financial resources to participate in and play hockey. This Igor Larionov knit jersey has a Russian manufacturer's tag in the inner hem that indicates size 52, but the jersey differs from the rest of the Team World jerseys, and with good reason. Larionov was to play for "Team Russia" and did so for the first two periods, after which he was "traded" to Team World for Steve Yzerman. Igor relates the story of how coach Scotty Bowman had the idea at a reception the night prior to the game, thinking that it would be neat if Larionov had the chance in his last game to play with both his fellow Russians and his former NHL teammates. Both Larionov and Yzerman agreed and the "deal" was done following the 2nd period. It turned out to be an eventful trade, since Yzerman scored two goals to help Team Russia to a 6-5 win! This jersey, which was done up in a hurry on the day of the game, has "WORLD" in individual letters sewn on diagonally on the front along with a nice embroidered farewell game patch. Igor's number "8" and his surname across the back are also a tackle twill-like material and sewn-on. Everything else, except for the "EFSI" patch on the back above "Larionov", is sublimated. A label sewn in the inner front hem includes the Larionov farewell game logo and indicates "Set 3". Jersey was autographed in red marker on the back by the hero of the night who added his number "8" and the date. Fantastic souvenir from a special night will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by hockey legend Igor Larionov.
