The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
After three seasons in St. Louis, Jacques Demers took his trade to Detroit in 1986 and tackled the job of turning around the lowly Red Wings who in ‘85-86 were by far the worst team in the NHL with just 17 wins and 40 points. The results were immediate as the Demers-led Wings doubled their output to 34 wins while racking up 78 points. If that wasn't enough to renew interest in the Motor City, the Red Wings beat Chicago and Toronto in the playoffs before losing to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Oilers. The Sporting News recognized Demers' work by naming him its NHL Coach of the Year and presenting him with this marvellous award. A 3 1/2" medallion is encased in Lucite and features three generic hockey players on the back while the front reads "The Sporting News - The First Newsweekly in Sports". Demers' name is engraved on a plaque below. The heavy award is 8" wide and 3 1/2" thick at the base. Another beauty from Jacques Demers' coaching award collection, it will be accompanied by his signed LOA.
