The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
The Montreal Canadiens' tradition of excellence continued during the 1978-79 season as the Habs captured both the Prince of Wales Trophy (for leading the Wales Conference with 115 points) and the Stanley Cup, each for the fourth straight year. Guy Lafleur made it 5 consecutive 50-goal seasons, Bob Gainey again was the obvious choice for the Selke trophy, while Dryden and Larocque claimed another Vezina trophy. In the playoffs, Montreal swept Toronto, squeaked by Boston in 7 games and took care of the Rangers in 5 with Bob Gainey winning the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP. The Canadiens, with 11 Hall-of-Famers, also established the second-longest Cup-winning streak but saw an end of an era as Bowman, Dryden and Lemaire all ended up elsewhere the following year. This miniature Wales trophy was presented to Montreal Vice-President Jean Beliveau. Engraved metal plaques on opposite sides of the 2-inch high wooden base read "Prince of Wales Trophy - Jean Beliveau" and "NHL Champions - Montreal Canadiens - 1978-79". A silver-plated cup with lid is supported by four hockey sticks which rise up from the base. The award is in excellent-plus condition with just minor tarnish to the engraved plaques and some silver loss on the "rock" that sits atop the base. From the personal collection of the legendary Jean Beliveau whose signed LOA will be included with this marvellous keepsake.
