The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
rilliant colors strike the beholder of this vintage Jean Beliveau Quebec Aces jersey that Mr. Beliveau says has been in his collection since before he and his wife Elise were married in June of 1953. By that time, the towering center had long since established himself as the best player NOT playing in the National Hockey League. Beliveau had spent two successful seasons wearing the Aces' green and red, winning scoring titles and packing arenas in Quebec City and around the Quebec Senior Hockey League. The tie-neck style jersey features a big thick chenille Aces crest sewn on the front while the number "9" on the back is red felt sewn on green felt. Although there are holes throughout the sweater, it is difficult for us to ascertain that it was ever game worn; there are no team repairs and our research has not led us to a photo picturing the Beliveau-era Aces with this particular crest on the front of their jerseys. As for the holes, we count 13 on the front, 9 on the back and 16 on the sleeves. They appear to be more the work of moths than of opposing players. The jersey was displayed at Quebec City's Museum of Civilization in 1998 as part of its "Fou du Hockey" (crazy about hockey) exhibit. An autographed photo of Beliveau standing in front of the display will be included, along with a framed vintage La Patrie color newspaper shot of Beliveau from his days with the Aces. Jean Beliveau's signed letter of authenticity will be included with this intriguing and special lot.
