The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
This is the puck that Jean Beliveau scored his very first NHL goal with………yes indeed, THE VERY FIRST!!! While in his last season of junior hockey with the Quebec Citadels, Beliveau was called up twice for 1-game stays with the Canadiens. It was during the second that the future Hall-of-Famer scored his first-ever NHL goal. The date was Saturday, January 21, 1951 and the place was the Montreal Forum where 14,175 Habs faithful were in attendance. Bernie Geoffrion, a rival of Beliveau with the "National de Montreal" junior squad was also summoned to Montreal and the two played together, each scoring once while setting up each other's goal. Beliveau's opened the scoring at 9:32 of the 1st period with Hal Laycoe also assisting on the goal scored on Chicago's Harry Lumley. Geoffrion's goal came just under 5 minutes into the 2nd period and proved to be the winner, the Habs beating the Hawks 4-2. The classic Art Ross Tyer/CCM puck that was used for the better part of the 1950's simply has "1" added in black marker to one of the rubber logos. It was originally part of a multi-puck plaque and thus has the hole on the back. At the request of Mr. Beliveau, we've had a new plaque made and will give the lucky high bidder the choice of remounting it or not. An absolute thrill to hold, the puck is in exceptional condition with no nicks, chips or slices. It will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by the one and only Jean Beliveau. The winning bidder is going to have a wonderful, tingly feeling when this magnificent treasure arrives!
