The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
Jean Beliveau offensively had his second best season ever in 1960-61, registering 90 points to finish runner-up to NHL scoring champ Bernie Geoffrion, who hit the magic 50-goal mark. The two teammates combined to lead the Canadiens to a 6-1 win over the Rangers in New York on Thursday, March 9, 1961, with both stars reaching important milestones. Beliveau assisted on all 3 of Boomer's goals, the last one being career #300 for Geoffrion. Other than the 3 assists, Beliveau also scored twice, with his 1st period goal at 5:39 counting as the 271st of his career to pass Habs' legends Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat and move him into 6th place on the all-time goal list. Gilles Tremblay assisted on the goal against Jack McCartan who was subbing for the injured Gump Worsley. Next day newspaper accounts of the game mention that it was one of Beliveau's best games ever. The Art Ross Tyer/CCM puck that the big center did it with has rubber-crested logos both front and back and had "271" added to the Rangers logo while "271 Buts" was written just above in gold ink. In outstanding condition with a light skate slice on the edge. At the request of Mr. Beliveau we've had a plaque made for it. The winning bidder will have the choice of how to mount the puck if so desired. This important piece of memorablia in Jean Beliveau's career and Montreal Canadiens history will be accompanied by a LOA signed by the Canadiens all-time MVP (Most Valuable Player/Person)!
