The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
After losing to the Red Wings in 7 games in the Stanley Cup finals the two previous seasons, the Montreal Canadiens were not to be denied in 1956. During the regular season, they became the first Montreal team to rack up 100 points as league MVP Jean Beliveau won the scoring title. The big center carried his fantastic play over into the playoffs as the Habs defeated both the Rangers and Red Wings in 5-game series. Beliveau's 7 goals in the finals, including one in each game, set a modern day record and his 12 playoff goals equaled Rocket Richard's mark. Considered by many hockey historians as the greatest team ever assembled, members of the ‘55-56 team received silver-plated tea sets. The highlight here is the engraved teapot which reads "National Hockey League - League Champions and Stanley Cup Winners - 1955-56 - Club De Hockey Canadien Inc. - Jean Beliveau". A couple of small indentations in the teapot to mention but overall the 3-piece set is in excellent condition. From the season that started a record dynasty, the sensational lot was on display at the Hall of Fame until just recently and will be accompanied by Jean Beliveau's signed letter of authenticity
