Winter 2004 Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/17/2004
Cannot overstate the importance of this one! A young but determined team of Americans won over the heavily favored Russians in the game that came to be known as "the Miracle on Ice". Offered here is a gold masterpiece from the folks at Tiffany & Co. (original case is included), this gorgeous prize has an image of the Torch on the face with Olympic rings and the words "XIII Olympic Winter Games". The verso has a pine branch and "Lake Placid 1980" along with the games official logo. The edge is engraved with the following: "Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver 1979". Each one of the first place winners during the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics received a gold medal (Gilt Silver plated with gold has ruled by the Olympic Comitee since their inauguration) identical to the one offered in this auction. The most important winners were obviously the 1980 Miracle on Ice Team USA hockey team. Known in the hobby as one of the toughest gold medals to obtain, only 73 gold medals were ever minted for the Lake Placid Olympics including this non awarded medal. This is the only example we know of, to ever surface and to be offered for public auction. In Gem Mint condition and comes in its original leather presentational case.
