Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/24/2025
On the eve of the Boston Bruins soon to become the very first American NHL franchise in 1924, the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets were competing in the United States Amateur Hockey Association - including against the Boston Athletic Association - from 1920 to the league folding in 1925. The Jackets were league champions in 1924, and for the 1925-26 season they joined the NHL as the Pittsburgh Pirates, lasting five seasons before a final NHL campaign in 1930-31 as the Philadelphia Quakers. This rare Boston Arena program is from Game 2 of the USAHA finals that featured the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets vs the Boston Athletic Association, played on March 28, 1924 (it was a best-of-seven series, with the Yellow Jackets winning Game 2 by a score of 2-1, and the series 4 games to 1 to claim the Fellowes Cup).
A number of prominent players from the era are listed in the line-up including Hago Harrington (Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens) and George "Gerry" Geran (Montreal Wanderers, Boston Bruins) for the Boston AA, and Roy Worters (HOFer Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Americans), Lionel Conacher (HOFer Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Americans, Chicago Black Hawks, Montreal Maroons), Baldy Cotton (Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Americans, Pittsburgh Pirates), Alex McKinnon (New York Americans) Rodger Smith (Pittsburgh Pirates), Duke McCurry (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Tex White (Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Quakers, New York Americans) for the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets, with the team coached by Dick Carroll - coach who led the Toronto Hockey team to the 1918 Stanley Cup championship. The date and opponents are listed on the cover, with just light handling wear to the program throughout including a few very light stains to the covers, with minimal rusting to the staples.
