Finishing third (3rd) in the National Hockey League at the end of the 1939-40 regular season with a record of 25–17–6, the Toronto Maple Leafs would knock off both the Chicago Black Hawks and the Detroit Red Wings during the first two (2) rounds of the 1940 Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning each series in sweeping facing, advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals where they were defeated by the New York Rangers 4 games to 2. Presented here, we offer this program for Game 1 of the 1940 Stanley Cup semifinals, played on March 26, 1940 at Maple Leaf Gardens, and won by the home team by a score of 2-1 on the backs of goals by Syl Apps and Sweeney Schriner plus stellar goaltending by Turk Broda. Featuring artwork of a Maple Leafs player by J. Ernest Sampson over the front cover while a Sweet Corporal Cigarettes advertisement graces the reverse, the 72-page program is complete including the center line-up, with advertising from numerous familiar companies found on the interior as well as those from CCM, Brown’s Sports and Love & Bennett as well. Exhibiting just honest handling wear which includes a crease to the cover and toning to the interior pages, the staples remain tight, with the program ideal for display.
