Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/24/2025
Established as the Alberta Oilers in the World Hockey Association for the league's inaugural campaign of 1972-73 before being renamed to simply the Edmonton Oilers the year after, the franchise would end their WHA tenure by finishing first (1st) overall in the league and narrowly losing out on the final AVCO Cup ever awarded. One (1) of four (4) franchises to merger in the National Hockey League beginning with the 1979-80 season and brining along with them a young superstar by the name of Wayne Gretzky, the Oilers have gone on to win a total of five (5) Stanley Cup's in their history as of this writing. Offered here, we present this ticket stub from Edmonton's first pre-season NHL home game in franchise history which was also the first NHL play of any kind for "The Great One". Played on October 1st, 1979 and seeing the Oilers knock off the Lons Angeles Kings by a score of 5 to 4, the stub is found in its original raw ungraded form and measures roughly 2" x 2 5/8" for its effort. Showing a tear along the entirety of its top edge and sporting an NHL shield logo in the middle of the orange background found over the bottom portion, the stub displays information pertaining to the date, venue, seat and original purchase price. Listing "No Refunds or Exchanges" over the reverse along with an advertisement for 1260 CFRN, the stub is found to be in overall excellent condition for its age, showing the aforementioned and expected tear along the top plus some minor surface creasing that is worth noting for accuracy.
