Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/24/2025
Marking the first time that O-Pee-Chee released its own unique set under its license from Topps, the 1968-69 release featured a checklist of 216 total cards split across two series releases during the season (132-cards in the 1st series and 84-cards in the 2nd series). Up for grabs here, is this 1968-69 O-Pee-Chee hockey “Series 1” empty wax box. Once housing thirty-six (36) packs that contained six (6) cards each along with a stick of bubble gum, names that could have been pulled from the wax wrapper housings as part of the 1st series include Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Bobby Hull, Terry Sawchuk and Gordie Howe as well as the set’s key RC of Bernie Parent. Measuring roughly 8” x 4” x 2”, the box displays “HOCKEY” on the top lid with an action shot featuring the Rangers and Black Hawks in the background. Found to be surviving in overall good condition for its effort, showcasing creasing throughout the top as well as over both sides and front edge, the back side of the box sports a Bazooka bubble gum advertisement as well as the odd spot stain and a pen mark near the bottom. Also showing the typically seen edge and corner wear throughout that is worth mentioning for accuracy, there is a bit of paper loss/surface wear over the top display lid that is worth mentioning for accuracy. A seldom seen offering that all box and pack enthusiasts should be clamoring for to add to their all-important collections. Of note, due to being sealed in cellophane, we cannot verify the condition/state of the interior other that it was filled with a piece of styrofoam to keep its structural integrity.
