Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025

An important hockey innovator along with his brother Lester, Frank Patrick was instrumental in introducing many commonplace features of the game including wearing uniform numbers, the adoption of blue line and use of the penalty shot, among others. Heading out west to form the Pacific Coast Hockey Association in 1911 and playing for the Vancouver Millionaires between 1911 and 1923, helping the club to a Stanley Cup in 1915, the first club West of Manitoba to do so at that time, Patrick would be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950. Offered here, we present this stunning postcard-sized photograph of Patrick that dates to his early days on Canada's west coast, circa 1913-14. A sepia photograph that pictures Patrick outdoors in a posed image while wearing his Vancouver uniform with stick in hand, the piece displays wonderfully for its age, remaining in overall excellent condition despite some minor edge/corner wear plus creasing to the corners. Also showing a small tear that extends up from the bottom edge towards the middle for roughly 1 1/2" that has been repaired over the reverse with a piece of scotch tape, there is also a bit of foxing/staining over the top left corner, with heavier amounts over the reverse side, particularly at the top edge. Sporting a number of handwritten notations pertaining to Patrick's hockey career that have been penned over the reverse in blue ink (with "338" at the top in pencil), don't miss out on this important rarity for your all-important collection.
