Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/24/2025
Introducing the collecting youth during the Original Six era to the past legends of the game, Topps first featured early hockey stars in the 1960-61 card set with a subset of 26 "All-Time Greats". The card giant again featured hockey's prominent early players in the 1961-62 set, with a subset of 52 stamps that also included current stars from the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and Chicago Black Hawks. The first we have ever encountered or offered, we have a gorgeous framed display featuring a complete set of 52 in 13-card uncut panels.
Featuring legendary icons Sprague Cleghorn, Cyclone Taylor, Charlie Gardiner, Art Ross, Dick Irvin, Paddy Moran, Alec Connell, Joe Malone, Nels Stewart, Georges Vezina and others, along with current stars such as Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Glenn Hall, Johnny Bucyk, Doug Harvey and Gump Worsley, the framed 21" x 31" display has all four panels attached in vertical rows. Each panel is held in place in the frame with plastic sleeves, with each panel held by four sleeves (these are placed with spacing between each, with some of the stamps exposed outside of the plastic). Not glued in, it appears the panels would be easily removable if so desired. The panels also appear to have been folded at one point, with fold lines visible on the McKenney, Prentice, Oliver, Henry, Worsley and Smith, as well between stamps including Irvin/Boivin, Pronovost/Ross, Gardiner/Bathgate, McKenney, Goheen, Balfour/Cook, Stewart/Worsley, Bucyk/Gerard, Smith/Vezina, Vasko/Clapper, Evans/Malone, Cleghorn/Burns, Harvey/Johnson, Prentice/Denneny, Lalonde/Mikita, Taylor/Pilote and Connell/Hall. Otherwise, the majority of the stamps show just light wear. We should also note that the the top two corners of the frame were partially broken and have been reglued.
