Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/24/2025
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” by 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number has survived. “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” is printed on the cork backing of each. We offer a complete set of Montreal Canadiens tiles totaling 19. Included are tiles for Goyette, Fontinato, JC Tremblay (cork backing completely removed), G Tremblay (red marker on the reverse of the tile), Berenson, Geoffrion, Hicke, Beliveau, Talbot (the grommet to hang the tile on the reverse was torn away along with some of the corking, but has been re-glued), Richard, Rousseau (a small area of cork backing is missing on the reverse, the hanging grommet has been torn away), Provost, Plante, Gauthier (there is a pair of tears to the cork backing), Maniago, Backstrom (glue over the entire cork backing, hanging grommet removed), Marshall, Johnson and Dickie Moore (crazing on the front of the tile). Each of the tiles has a completely clean front (except Moore), with some issues for some tiles on the reverse as mentioned. Each will come in an original individual Cowan box (varying degrees of wear and tear to the boxes), with notations handwritten on each - usually the original player's name that came with that particular box. Overall, a very nice group in rarely seen complete team form.
