Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/24/2025
One of the few seasons during the decade in which the Mickey Mantle-led powerhouse New York Yankees were not crowned World Champions, the 1957 MLB season witnessed the Milwaukee Braves claim the franchise's only Fall Classic victory. That summer, endless youths would invade grocery and corner stores on the hunt for the latest Topps baseball cards. We offer a near-complete set (399/411) along with an original vending pack box, missing just cards 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 407, the NNO checklists (4) and the Lucky Penny card for completion. First, it should be noted that all cards have the respective player's uniform number handwritten in ink on the back of each card, with some cards having additional ink marks or the name handwritten of another team. The listed approx grades DO NOT reflect this defect.
The top highlights include 95-Mantle PR to FR (ink on front left near his belt, surface and corner wear), 1-Williams PR (crease, rounded corners and wear), 18-Drysdale rookie FR (corner wear, miscut with no left border), 302-Koufax GD to GD+ (small crease bottom left), 35-Robinson rookie GD to GD+ (corner wear, tiny wrinkle), 328-Robinson rookie GD to VG (light corner wear, small ding top left).
This is followed by 2-Berra GD to VG (tiny crease bottom left corner), 10-Mays GD to VG (corner and border wear, OC), 20-Aaron PR to FR (creased plus corner wear), 25-Ford FR to GD (corner and border wear), 76-Clemente PR (large crease) and 170-Snider GD to GD+ (rounded corners).
Rounding out the set, we have 30-Reese GD to GD+ (corner wear with rounding), 55-Banks FR to GD (corner area crease and wear), 125-Kaline GD to GD+ (tiny crease bottom right and corner wear), 250-Matthews PR (miscut, creased and corner wear), 286-Richardson rookie GD to GD+ (tiny crease bottom left), 338 Bunning rookie GD to VG (corner wear), 400-Dodgers Sluggers PR to FR (back damage with small scuffs), 407-Mantle/Berra PR (ink on front, crease). The remaining cards in the set are in the GD to VG range, with a small percentage in the PR to PR/FR range.
The 500-count vending pack box is complete but currently broken down and folded flat, and we are unable to see the stamp due to writing and a piece of clear tape. There are a few other pieces of tape, with handwriting on the lid. There is also considerable handling wear throughout and toning, with the box somewhat fragile.
