Named captain of the Princeton football in 1913 for his senior year, legendary athlete and decorated World War I fighter pilot Hobey Baker scored 180 points (a school record that lasted until 1964), caught over 900 punts and averaged 300 yards in punt returns per season during his three years playing for the Tigers. We offer a pair of rare original photos from the November 8, 1913 match at University Field in Princeton, NJ, between the Harvard Crimson and Princeton Tigers, with Hobey Baker visible in one of the photos. A 3-0 loss at the hands of the school's main rivals, Princeton would complete the 1913 football season with 5 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. Both at approx 5" x 7", the first photo shows a scrum near center-field, with a player in the background appearing blond like Baker with no helmet, while all the remaining players on the field all appear to be wearing helmets. According to online information, "easily recognizable on the field because he wore no helmet, Baker was referred to as 'the blond Adonis of the gridiron' by Philadelphia sportswriters. Furthermore, Baker was a safety - which would explain his distance from the main scrum in the photo. The second photo shows the packed stands and people along the sideline of the field, with this possibly taken at the conclusion of the match. The photos have stamps from Bain News Service on the reverse along with the date of "Nov 9 1913", with each showing minor surface wear.
