This classic blue Sabres jersey was worn by Derek Smith during the 1978–79 season. Smith
was a steady presence for Buffalo from the mid-’70s through the early-’80s, playing parts of
seven seasons with the club. He provided valuable scoring depth, particularly in the playoffs,
where he recorded 23 points in 30 games.
The jersey were offering here features the traditional team crest across the chest and both
shoulders. “19” is applied in yellow over white tackle twill on both sleeves and the verso. Inside
the collar, the tagging includes an Al Dekdebrun label just to the left of an affixed Stall & Dean
tag. Further along is a size “52” tag, and directly behind that, a fly tag marked with an “8” which
designates this jersey for the 1978–79 season. A double garter-style fight strap is also sewn into
the interior rear.
This jersey has been through some hard-fought NHL battles, with extensive wear throughout the
vintage garment. The front exhibits stick and puck marks and some paint transfer marks. A small team repair is also noticeable near the hem. The right sleeve shows an additional red transfer mark along with extensive material-backed team repairs near the cuff. Several more team repairs are visible on the left sleeve. Stick and puck marks are also present, along with red transfer marks and two unrepaired holes in the fabric near the cuff. On the back, two more team repairs can be found near the hem, along with white transfer marks and some faint stick marks. Fraying is visible on the interior elbows.
