Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/29/2025
Designed for the Canadian market by Donruss, the 1985 Leaf baseball set is identical in design to the Donruss set minus a green leaf on each front, with the reverses featuring text in both English and French. The set is also smaller with just 264 cards as opposed to Donruss' 660, with a differing number system. Stars in the set include Ryne Sandberg (#1), Don Mattingly (#7), Cal Ripken, Jr. (#14), Tony Gwynn (#25), Ozzie Smith (#60), Tom Seaver (#101), Pete Rose (#144), Carlton Fisk (#155), George Brett (#176), Wade Boggs (#179), Mike Schmidt (#205), Rickey Henderson (#208), and Nolan Ryan (#216), while the top rookies featured include Orel Hershiser (#38), Roger Clemens (#99), Kirby Puckett (#107), and Dwight Gooden (#234). The 1985 Leaf set also has two cards – Tim Raines (#252) and Dave Stieb (#251) – identified as “Canadian Greats” – that do not appear in the Donruss offering. We offer a wax box with 36 unopened packs.
With each card measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/2”, the 36 packs each contain 12 cards and 3 puzzle pieces. Featuring Ryne Sandberg's regular issue and Diamond Kings cards on the box lid, the attractive box was recently inspected and certified by the unopened specialists at Baseball Card Exchange, with company’s shrink wrap surrounding the prize, with a label, hologram and certification number applied to the bottom of the box along with "Unopened Wax Box". Regarding condition, the top part of the baseball shape on the lid has been slightly pushed in along the perforation, with the original "35 cents" square torn away, with a small tear from the opening to the edge of the lid. Despite this, the box displays extremely well overall, with just some light corner wear.
