Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025

Awarded a franchise by the NHL on June 8, 1972, and named in a contest after "The Scout" - a famous statue by artist Cyrus E. Dallin of a Sioux Indian on horseback surveying the landscape - with this depicted on the team crests, the Kansas City Scouts played in just two season from 1974 to 1976. Finishing in 5th place in the Smythe Division in both seasons, the Scouts were sold in 1976 and relocated to Denver, Colorado, to become the Colorado Rockies, which in turn lasted six seasons before again moving to East Rutherford, New Jersey, to become the New Jersey Devils.
We present a rare and desirable Kansas City Scouts jersey from the club's second and final season in 1975-76. Sporting a Wilson label to the collar with "50" sizing along with a Gunzo's supplier tag, the team crest features chain-stitched detailing, with "38" sewn to the sleeves and verso in white-over-red tackle twill. There is also a felt chain-stitched "75 76" year swatch affixed to the inside hem. The jersey has had a number change on the sleeves and reverse, with the numbers "8" appearing original, with puckering on the back of the each of these numbers on the interior of the jersey, while the numbers "3" were changed and appear to be vintage, but not the original numbers as they exhibit no puckering on the back within the interior of the jersey, and they are sewn-on with a different color of stitching. Additionally, the "3" numbers on the sleeves are taller (about 4 3/8") than the original "8" numbers (3 3/4"), while the numbers on the reverse of the jersey are the same height. The former numbers replaced by the "3" numbers appear like they could be the number "2", but we can't ascertain for sure. Regarding the team crest, it appears to be a vintage original, but does appear to have been repositioned and shows what appears to be fairly modern stitching. Also, the fight strap was removed and its outline and former placement is easily visible.
Game-wear includes burns, transfer marks, scrapes, material pulls and numerous team repairs - including a pair of large vertical examples over the lower front and one on the upper reverse. The additional repairs are situated on the front (11 including a clump directly beneath the team crest), reverse (6), and left sleeve (7). There is also heavy pilling to the interior sleeves. No players are listed as wearing #38 for the Scouts in 1974-75, with Doug Buhr listed as wearing #28 while playing six games for the team that season. We should further note that the changes to the jersey are most likely due to the fact that when the Scouts moved to Colorado for the 1976-77 season, the Rockies removed the team crests and used these jerseys without crests, but did also use them with Rockies crests during their training camp. A short-lived franchise from a half century past, this Kansas City prize would be a focal point in any vintage, 1970s or defunct teams jersey collection.
