Well known to advanced collectors as one of the most innovative and important companies regarding hockey stick manufacturing, St Mary's Wood Products Company was one of the first to produce built-up, built-up one-side and paddle goal sticks. Possibly the earliest paddle goal stick to still exist, this model was made by St Mary's circa 1917. Paddle sticks were first patented in 1917 by Montreal's McNiece & Orchard, with St Mary's following suit. This example has the full paper label, with "D.B. Double Blade Goal" stamped to the paddle (we have previously seen a military hockey team photo dated 1917 with the goaltender holding a similar style paddle stick also marked "Double Blade") Also helping to date the stick, upon close inspection you can see that the stick is actually a built-up one-side that was modified, which makes sense, as the company was still producing these models while transitioning into paddle goal sticks. Additionally, the stick was first found in an attic with a St Mary's players stick with matching paper label and the company's famous scroll logo over the heel, with these logos discontinued by St Mary's just after 1920. The blade has tape on the paddle and blade, with two cracks beneath the tape (the stick is completely solid). Lastly, the knob has been cut a bit short. This is one of the best goal sticks we have ever handled or seen in 25 years. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
