Mario Lemieux was in his second NHL season and the Edmonton Oilers were two-time defending Stanley Cup champions when O-Pee-Chee released its 1985-86 hockey card effort, consisting of 264 total cards, this offered near complete set largely remains in the EX-MT to NM range with a few exceptions. Missing the card of #62 Scott Stevens, the set’s key rookie card of Mario The Magnificent is present, #9 in the set and registering in EX-MT vicinity with a small corner ding on the top left corner and a rough cut top edge while being off-centered from left to right. The other most well-known rookie in the set, #237 of Al MacInnis, falls in the range of EX-MT to NM condition and displays pleasing centering. Other key cards in the set include #29 Yzerman (EX-MT – off-centered), #40 Bourque (GD – large gum stain on the front, print mark on the bottom right corner and is off-centered), #85 Coffey (EX-MT), #110 Lindbergh (EX-MT – off-centered), #120 Gretzky (EX+) and #177 Messier (EX+ due to the gum stain on the front). Cards #257, #258 and #259, the League Leader cards of Gretzky all fall in the same EX-MT+ condition range while #262, the rookie scoring leaders card of Lemieux, falls in PR grade dude to a tear at the top and a gum stain over much of the front. The checklist cards, #165 and #256 in the set are both unmarked and clean, #165 is in the vicinity of EX-MT+ to NM while #256 is EX+ in our books due to multiple print marks over the front and one on the reverse. The rest of the cards within the set are pretty consistent throughout, falling in EX-MT to NM condition.
