Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022

Leaving the confines of the NHL to battle Hitler with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943, Sid Abel is best remembered as a member of Motor City’s famed Production Line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. A four-time All-Star throughout his HOF career, Abel also won the Hart Memorial Trophy in 1949, along with a trio of Stanley Cup championships. From his first of two selections as an NHL First Team All-Star, we have an “All-Stars” jersey worn by Abel at the 1949 NHL All-Star contest. A McNiece's of Montreal label is sewn in the left hip area. Featuring a gorgeous thick chenille NHL crest with "1949" residing over the chest, five white felt stars arch over the upper front, with the repeated on the upper reverse. “12” in layered felt is also sewn to the verso. Surviving in gorgeous condition, with the material supple and the colours bright, there is some light pilling to the jersey, with no obtrusive marks or damage, and just single repairs to the upper front and reverse done at some point. Additionally, we should note that the particularities of the three middle stars on the top front area of the jersey matches up to his image on the 1949 All-Star team photo, but the image is not in high enough resolution to call a definitive photo-match. Originating from Abel’s personal collection, a pair of photos of the star holding the jersey will accompany, along with his signed LOA.
