All hailing from the collection of longtime sporting journalist Allen Abel, and featuring mostly New York items, we have a collection of mainly 1970s MLB programs including playoff, exhibition and spring training – with many having ticket stubs or Abel’s media passes, along with New York Mets ticket stubs, assorted sports pins and a few New York Knicks baseketball items, with the grand total reaching approx 185 items. Included, we have a 1975 ALCS program with Abel’s press pass stapled to the interior, 1976 ALCS program, 1977 All-Star Game program, 1978 World Series program (loose page), 1978 NLSC program with Abel’s press pass stapled to the interior, 1980 ALCS program, 1981 NLCS program with Abel’s press pass, and 1981 NL East Division Series program with Abel’s press pass. Other highlights include 1977 Twins (with pass), 1974 Braves, 1975 Giants (with pass) and 1976 Mets (with pass) HOF game scorecards, a 1973 Red Sox program with Abel’s courtesy pass and ticket stub stapled to the interior, a 1977 A’s yearbook and a 1966 Senators yearbook. Next, we have an additional 68 MLB programs – mostly from the 1970s, including spring training and exhibition games - with many having ticket stubs stapled to the interiors, 15 minor league programs, approx 44 NY Mets ticket stubs (1960s/70s), a 1969 Mets NLCS ticket stub (tape), “The Amazin’ Mets” 45 record in the original sleeve, and a 1982 All-Star Game button. The basketball items include four 1960s/70s NY Knicks ticket stubs including a 1972 playoff stub, four team-issued Knicks photos (Bradley, Frazier, Reed and Russell), Knicks media guides for 1968-69, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1975-76, 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1982-83, a 1973 Harlem Globetrotters magazine and a Naismith HOF booklet. The lot also contains the bulk of Abel’s sports pins, which totals 30.
Covering the world's greatest sporting endeavors for half a century which included serving for a decade on Capitol Hill and in the briefing room of the White House, longtime journalist, sports columnist, producer and on-air television correspondent Allen Abel has traveled to over one hundred countries, witnessing epic battles and accomplishments from the press box; from Ali vs Fraser, to the Miracle On Ice, the genesis of Gretzky, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Winning six National Magazine awards for political, travel and sports writing as a contributor to numerous publications including Sports Illustrated and Maclean's, Abel was also an on-air host, narrator, writer or producer on dozens of documentaries for HBO, Discovery, National Geographic, Hockey Night in Canada, the CBC and others. Abel has also authored a number of non-fiction works including 'The Short Life of Hughie McLoon — A True Story of Baseball, Magic, and Murder'
