Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022

Known for its baseball and non-sport cards at the time, Topps, in the estimation of many, sure hit a home run with its inaugural 1954-55 hockey card issue, the popping colors contributing to an all-time classic. An almost even split of KSA-graded cards (29) and raw examples (31) comprise this intriguing offering, with the encapsulated portion led by superstars Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuk, their cards receiving marks of 5 EX and 4 VGE respectively. Noteworthy aspects include a horizontal surface indentation (above Gordie’s right glove) that displays as a crease at first glance, as well as dings to three corners, while minor back damage is visible near Sawchuk’s number “58.” Leading a trio at 7 NM is 5-Red Kelly, with 22-Hergesheimer and 46-Goldham the others, which just edge a stack of 13 at 6.5 ENM+. Highlights are 1-Dick Gamble and 10-Gump Worsley, with commoners accounting for the rest and shown in our images. Five cards, including 39-Delvecchio, are at 6 ENM, while four at 4 VGE are all notable; 32-Henry RC, 41-Stanley, 42-Sullivan RC and 54-Mosienko. Concluding the graded segment are two Hall of Famers at 2 G; 27-Pronovost and 49-Quackenbush. Meanwhile, the raw lineup is dominated by crease-free cards in the VG+, VG-EX and VG-EX+ realm, with a few others, including 18-Mohns RC, making to EX and a half-dozen lesser lights (commons) with multiple creases completing. Noteworthy and at VG+ is 60-Milt Schmidt, the set’s last numbered card. Finally, the KSA holders have been very well cared for with hardly a scratch or scuff detected throughout.
*It should be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those of PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of these cards through any of those services therefore would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
