Fifteen players from each of the four American-based teams is what the deciders at Topps decided on when planning the company’s first hockey card set, with the artistic renditions and vivid popping colors making the 1954-55 set an all-time classic. Other than kingpins Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuk and a few other condition exceptions, the offered assembly features attractive, mostly crease-free mid-grade examples, with one-third (20 cards) making it to EX or better, with possibly a couple/few of them just shy at VG-EX+. The group includes Hall of Famers Bathgate, Delvecchio, Quackenbush and Mosienko and rookie cards of 18-Mohns and 35-McKenney, while most notable among 29 in the VG, VG+ and VG-EX realm are Worsley (VG) and Lindsay (VG+). The key Howe card has a corner ding and corner wear and displays as a VG example, although some chipping/paper loss at the top right corner lowers its technical grade, with a 1-1/2” back crease and a surface scratch sending the Sawchuk entry to G+. Sufficient corner wear drops 1-Gamble and 5-Kelly to a notch under VG, while four (crease-free) cards have stains on the back. Included are 41-Stanley and 60-Schmidt, the latter miscut in some people’s eyes. Not-drastic back damage affects two commons; 17-Mortson and 29-Mickoski, with varying degrees of toning on the backs throughout also to note. With terrific eye appeal is Topps’ inaugural hockey card effort – the most beautiful of all in the eyes of many.
