Featuring a consecutive run of vintage Blue Books beginning in 1965-66 and continuing unbroken until 1987-88, missing just 1985-86, we have a New York Rangers media guide collection of 30. Spanning from a single dollar purchase price in 1965 to a whopping $5.00 for a 1987-88 guide, the collection includes 1965-66, 1966-67, 1967-68, 1968-69 (part of a page is cut away), 1970-71, 1972-73 (2, one shows discolouration to the spine), 1973-74 (2), 1974-75, 1975-76 (2), 1976-77 (2), 1977-78 (2), 1978-79, 1979-80 (2, with one team-signed by 28 including Esposito, Hedberg, Greschner, Duguay, Baker, Nilsson and others), 1980-81 (2, with one team-signed by 28 including Esposito, Nilsson, Hedberg, Beck, Davidson, Duguay and others, one page detached), 1981-82 (team-signed by 34 with personalizations, including Pavelich, Rogers, Laidlaw, Hedberg, Fotiu, Duguay and others), 1982-83 (2, one is signed by a few players), 1983-84 (team-signed by 26 in blue marker including Beck, Hanlon, Huber, Laidlaw, Larouche, the Maloneys and others), 1984-85, 1986-87 and 1987-88. The majority of the publications show just light wear. The entire group hails from the personal collection of longtime sports journalist Allen Abel.
Covering the world's greatest sporting endeavors for half a century which included serving for a decade on Capitol Hill and in the briefing room of the White House, longtime journalist, sports columnist, producer and on-air television correspondent Allen Abel has traveled to over one hundred countries, witnessing epic battles and accomplishments from the press box; from Ali vs Fraser, to the Miracle On Ice, the genesis of Gretzky, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Winning six National Magazine awards for political, travel and sports writing as a contributor to numerous publications including Sports Illustrated and Maclean's, Abel was also an on-air host, narrator, writer or producer on dozens of documentaries for HBO, Discovery, National Geographic, Hockey Night in Canada, the CBC and others. Abel has also authored a number of non-fiction works including 'The Short Life of Hughie McLoon — A True Story of Baseball, Magic, and Murder'
