Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/21/2022
71,271 fanatical hockey die-hards packed Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Years Day, 2008 to witness the first ever NHL Winter Classic, pitting the Buffalo Sabres against the Pittsburgh Penguins with Sid the Kid’s shootout goal becoming a lasting image of the contest. This jersey was worn during the second period by Ryan Malone. Made by Reebok and featuring a size “58+” tag on the inner collar, the front is stylized with a throwback Penguins crest under a tie-up neck and the Winter Classic patch sewn-on the right breast. The sleeves and verso feature Malone’s number “12” in dual-layer tackle twill with “Malone” on an affixed matching nameplate. Worn for just a single period of play, there is no visible signs of game wear but there is staining on the left sleeve and at the end of the tie-up lace. A Penguins team patch resides over the inside hem of the jersey to go along with a MeiGray patch numbered “E05840” and according to their population report the jersey is a “Blue Throwback - Winter Classic 1/1/08 (Period 2)” example. An LOA from MeiGray will accompany the item.
