Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
Embarking on his lengthy Hall of Fame career with a single season in the WHA in 1978-79, Mark Messier enjoyed 25 seasons of high-caliber NHL hockey, with his 1,887 regular-season points third all-time behind just Jaromir Jagr and longtime teammate Wayne Gretzky. Taking part in the 2003 Heritage Classic with Edmonton during the MegaStars contest that featured legends from the Oilers led by Gretzky battle the dreaded Montreal Canadiens led by Guy Lafleur, we have the signed Oilers captain’s jersey worn by Messier during the warmup skate preceding the match. Each player received three jerseys for the contest, one for the warmup, and one for each half (the game was played in two 15-minute halves as opposed to three 20-minute periods), with this example kept by the Oilers. Elite labeling along with a “58” size tag is affixed to the collar, with NHL and CCM crests over the reverse hem. Styled with the classic oil drop team crest in tackle twill, “11” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with the NHL “V” Vintage crest over the right breast and captain’s “C” over the left. Messier signed the second reverse “1” in black marker, with no issues for the signature. Worn for just the pregame skate, the jersey shows no signs of game-use, with MeiGray and team patches to the inside hem, and according to the MeiGray population report, the jersey is a "Blue MegaStars w/C - Worn in WarmUp before MegaStars game 11/22/03 - Kept by Team" specimen. An LOA will accompany from the Oilers along with an 8” x 10” photo of Messier from the contest. As the only active player to compete in the match, the Moose received special permission from the New York Rangers to play for the Oilers.
