A classic grouping from a decade dominated by Wayne Gretzky and saw individual dynasties from the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers, this lot up for grabs includes complete sets of O-Pee-Chee’s 1981-82 and 1984-85 releases as well as a 1985-86 near complete set and a stash of various other 1980s cardboard. The 1981-82 set, complete at 396 cards and displaying in EX-MT condition on average, is highlighted by the rookie cards of Savard, Kurri, Coffey, Moog, Stastny and Ciccarelli with the first four names in the condition range of EX-MT with all displaying light corner wear/dings while the Stastny and Ciccarelli offerings are more in the scope of EX-MT/NM. Of note, the Coffey rookie shows 70-30 centering with the Stastny displaying 60-40 centering. Card #1 of Ray Bourque is around the vicinity of EX-MT/NM as well while 106-Gretzky and 118-Messier are both around EX-MT. Finally, card #125, Gretzky’s Super Action release is in the range of G/VG due to a crease with the following card, #126, his points leader’s card, better and in the vicinity of VG/EX. All three checklist cards have been marked.
The 1984-85 set could be described of as all over the place with its condition as many of the cards are found in lower grades with many also in the scope of EX-MT/NM as well. Paced by the rookies of Yzerman, LaFontaine, Gilmour and Neely, all of which appear around EX-MT/NM, cards #208 and #243 of Wayne Gretzky are in mirroring EX-MT/NM condition. For other key cards, #1 of Ray Bourque is POOR/FAIR due to creases while #239 and #241 of Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr are both in the vicinity of VG/EX-MT while showing light corner wear/dings. Card #254 of Mark Messier is found in the range of a respectable EX-MT mark while all three checklists remain unmarked but are in poor condition largely due to bad surfaces/edges and corners plus creases.
The 1985-86 near complete set includes 263 out of the 264 cards and is missing the key rookie card of Mario Lemieux. In an overall consistent grade range of EX-MT/NM throughout the rest of the set despite slight humidity curves being observed. Cards sharing the sentiment in terms of the EX-MT/NM vicinity include 29-Yzerman, 40-Bourque, 110-Lindberg, 177-Messier and 237-MacInnis (RC). Those just a tad lower and in the scope of EX-MT include #120 of Wayne Gretzky and #262, the Mario Lemieux Scoring Leaders while both checklists, #165 and #256 respectively, remain unmarked and in the range of EX-MT/NM.
The 1980-81 lot includes an approximate total of 425+ cards and does not make up a full set. Missing the key Bourque and Messier rookies as well as the 2nd year Wayne Gretzky release, the group is mostly O-Pee-Chee’s with a few Topps examples mixed in. Including many doubles, the cards are in a variety of conditions with the majority being in the range of VG-EX/EX and including names such as Borje Salming, Mark Howe, Bob Gainey and Billy Smith. Additionally, the team checklist cards have been marked. Lastly, is a group of miscellaneous 1980’s O-Pee-Chee releases that are included. Mostly in low grade conditions, and including some stars and rookie specimens, about ten (10) Wayne Gretzky leaders’ cards are included as well as one (1) of his 1981-82 third year cards with all in low grade shape. Paul Coffey and Doug Gilmour rookies are found in the group that totals approx. 375 total cards, with both creased and once again low grade.
