Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
Three years prior to chasing and breaking Babe Ruth’s single-season home run mark is when rookie cards of Roger Maris like this were first discovered in Topps packs, with very little to find fault with this just-back-from-PSA example, other than the centering. A less-than-sharp top left corner and light wear to the bottom right corner, the latter detected upon magnification, are notable, with the back of card #47 displaying Roger’s big league rookie season numbers (14 homers in 358 at-bats) and his career minor league stats, which included a .303 batting average. Roger was dealt to Kansas City in ’58 and then on to the Yankees in 1960 when he hit 39 roundtrippers before his stressful/magical 61-homer campaign in ’61. Second only to Mickey Mantle in terms of importance/value in Topps’ 1958 issue is the Maris card, with this Roger, (in a PSA holder without scratches), awaiting its new appreciative home.
