Competing against and dominating 20-year-olds while still in his mid-teens, Wayne Gretzky earned Rookie of the Year honours in the Metro Junior B Hockey League in 1975–76, and led the Seneca Nationals the following season with 72 points in 32 regular-season games. The Nationals would win the 1977 Metro championship, with The Great One scoring 75 points including 40 goals in just 23 playoff matches. Hailing from the personal collection of Nationals’ trainer Norm Scully, with his signed LOA accompanying, we have a signed stick used by Gretzky during the 1976-77 season with Seneca. A Louisville Slugger model with “Toronto Nats” over both sides of the shaft (the Toronto Nationals were renamed the Seneca Nationals in 1976-77), “140” is stamped to the upper shaft, with “9” handwritten (Wayne wore #9 with Seneca, and started wearing #99 during his time with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds). The original black tape is in place over the blade and white over the handle and knob, with one striping accent remaining, one missing. Wayne has signed the upper shaft in ballpoint along with teammates Bill Gardner, Brian Carroll, Craig Wilson and Daryl Evans, with the signatures displaying well, with some additional scribbling – possibly a signature – on the mid-underside. Exhibiting good game-use with wear and marks to the blade and lower shaft, the stick remains uncracked, and serves as one of the earliest models used by the game’s all-time greatest player. This museum-worthy prize is accompanied by a Toronto Nationals program and Vaughn Nationals line-up page with Gretzky listed in both along with Norm Scully as trainer.
Joining the Toronto Nationals of the Metro Junior B Hockey League in 1974-75 as a team trainer, Norm Scully spent a trio of seasons serving the club, including in 1976-77 when the team was renamed the Seneca Nationals and was graced by the presence of none other than Wayne Gretzky. We offer a number of items from Scully’s personal holdings from his time as trainer, including desirable pucks he collected from both the NHL and WHA.
